Elon Musk, the new CEO of Twitter, announced that Donald Trump’s account had been restored after a survey showed that users narrowly supported the action.
Mr Musk tweeted, “The people have spoken,” claiming that 51.8% of more than 15 million Twitter users voted for the restriction to be lifted.
However, “I don’t see any reason for it,” as the former US president has previously stated, he may not return to the podium.
In 2021, his profile was taken down because of concerns it could promote violence.
After supporters of Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol in Washington, DC on 6 January, Twitter’s previous management took swift action.
As Congress tried to officially declare Joe Biden the winner of the presidential election, hundreds of protesters stormed the building. The ensuing violence claimed the lives of five people, including four civilians and a police officer.
